For most athletes, a coach’s first impression comes from video — and decisions are often made in the first 30 seconds. A strong video can mean the difference between a reply and being ignored.

How Long Should It Be?

• 3–5 minutes total
• Lead with your best 6–10 plays
• Hook coaches right away — they may stop watching after the first minute if nothing stands out

Must-Have Elements

• Title Card (5–7 seconds) with:
  • Name
  • Graduation/Enrollment Year
  • Position
  • Height + Approach/Block Touch
  • Club/High School
  • GPA & test scores (if available)
  • Contact info
• Highlight Presentation
  • Circle or arrow yourself before each clip
  • Show clean angles (endline or mid-court)
  • Stable camera — avoid shaky footage

Skills to Include by Position

Outside/Opposite Hitter (OH/OPP)

• Attacking vs. block (in-system & out-of-system)
• Serve receive (OH especially)
• Blocking vs. top attackers
• Back-row attack
• Tough serving

Middle Blocker (MB)

• Quick attacks (1s, 31s, slides)
• Transition footwork speed
• Closing blocks laterally
• Blocking vs. tempo offenses
• Serving (jump float/jump spin if possible)

Setter (S)

• In-system sets to pins and middles
• Out-of-system setting decisions
• Variety: quick tempo, back sets, slides, back-row sets
• Defense and blocking when front row
• Serve consistency

Libero / Defensive Specialist (L/DS)

• Serve receive consistency across multiple rotations
• Digging hard-driven swings
• Free-ball and transition passing
• Communication and leadership clips
• Serving under pressure

When to Update Your Video

• Every season — fall, winter, and spring
• After major tournaments or performance milestones
• Whenever you improve measurables (approach touch, blocking numbers)
