Men’s Basketball Scholarships

Men’s Basketball Scholarships (Latest NCAA Update)
College men’s basketball scholarships are now governed by roster caps rather than fixed limits. Under the latest NCAA model, Division I programs can roster up to 15 total players (including walk-ons) and award up to 15 scholarships using an equivalency system. This flexibility allows coaches to divide funding between full and partial awards—creating more scholarship opportunities for student-athletes worldwide.
NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Scholarships
- Roster cap: 15 total players
- Scholarships available: Up to 15 (full or partial)
- Type: Equivalency sport
- Average roster: 13 – 15 players
How it works now:
Coaches can distribute scholarship money freely among all rostered players. The previous “13 full-ride headcount” rule is gone for programs that have adopted the current model.
What this means for players:
- More athletes can earn at least partial aid
- Top recruits may still receive full rides
- Academic and need-based aid can stack
- Fewer walk-on spots because of roster limits
💡 Schools that have opted into the NCAA’s new roster-cap framework can now tailor scholarships to their team strategy—rewarding depth, performance, and academics.
