Men’s Basketball Recruiting Guidelines

To get recruited for college basketball, athletes must get familiar with men’s basketball recruiting guidelines and meet specific athletic, technical, and academic standards. While every coach values different traits, most NCAA, NAIA, and JUCO programs evaluate players based on height, athleticism, basketball IQ, work ethic, and academics.

These guidelines provide a realistic snapshot of what college coaches look for — and where you may fit best.

Point Guard (PG)

  • Height:
    • D1: 6’0″–6’3″
    • D2/NAIA: 5’10″–6’2″
    • JUCO/D3: 5’9″+
  • Key Attributes:
    • Leadership and court vision
    • Strong handle under pressure
    • Passing accuracy and tempo control
    • 3-point consistency (35%+ ideal)
    • Decision-making on pick-and-roll
  • Academic Expectations:
    • GPA: 3.0+ for D1/D2 programs

Shooting Guard (SG)

  • Height:

  • Key Attributes:
    • Reliable perimeter shooting (40%+ FG, 35%+ 3PT)
    • Off-ball movement and spacing
    • Ability to defend multiple positions
    • Finishing through contact
    • Athleticism and vertical explosiveness
  • Coach Tip: Great shooters with good grades are always in demand, even for partial scholarship spots.

Small Forward (SF)

  • Height:
    • D1: 6’5″–6’8″
    • D2/NAIA: 6’3″–6’7″
    • JUCO/D3: 6’2″+
  • Key Attributes:
    • Versatility — scoring, rebounding, and defending
    • Ability to guard 2–4 positions
    • Mid-range and 3-point capability
    • Rebounding and transition finishing
    • Strong basketball IQ and adaptability

Power Forward (PF)

  • Height:
    • D1: 6’7″–6’10”
    • D2/NAIA: 6’5″–6’9″
    • JUCO/D3: 6’4″+
  • Key Attributes:
    • Physicality and paint dominance
    • Rebounding (8+ RPG) and interior defense
    • Face-up shooting or stretch-four ability
    • Ball screens, pick-and-pop execution
    • Strength and conditioning discipline
  • Academic Expectation: GPA 3.0+ and core classes completed by junior year.
