What is a sports scholarship?

Play your sport. Earn your degree.

U.S. colleges recruit student-athletes from around the world and can provide financial aid based on athletic ability, academics or a combination of both. A scholarship can make an American education more affordable while allowing you to continue competing at a high level.

Athletic scholarship

Financial aid connected to the value you can bring to a college athletic program.

Many athletes combine different types of aid. What matters most is the final cost of attending the college.

There is a college level for more athletes than you think.

You do not need to be an Olympian or national-team athlete to compete in the USA. With college programs across different associations and levels, opportunities exist for a wide range of student-athletes.

Every scholarship package is different.

Athletic scholarship offers are only one piece of the financial picture. College costs vary widely, and the strongest offer is the one that produces the right final cost while still giving you the athletic and academic opportunity you want.

01

Athletic aid

Money connected directly to your place in the athletic program.

02

Academic aid

Your academic profile can add significant scholarship value.

03

Institutional aid

Additional eligible aid may further reduce your total cost.

The number that matters COMPARE YOUR FINAL COST.

A 50% scholarship at one university can still cost more than a different package somewhere else. Compare tuition, housing, meals, fees and every form of aid together.

Sports scholarship FAQ

Sports scholarships, answered.

The questions international student-athletes and their families ask most often when they begin exploring college sports in the United States.

Can international students get sports scholarships in the USA?

Yes. International student-athletes can receive athletic scholarships or other institutional aid at many U.S. colleges, subject to the rules of the school and governing association.

Can I get a full sports scholarship?

Full scholarships exist, but they are not the norm for every sport or athlete. Many offers are partial, and the final package can combine athletic, academic and other institutional aid.

How good do I need to be to compete in college?

There is no single standard. U.S. college sports include different associations, divisions and program levels, so the right opportunity depends on your athletic ability, potential, academics, position or event and the needs of each program.

What grades do I need?

Academic requirements vary by college and governing association. Strong grades can improve admission options and may also increase the amount of academic scholarship money available to you.

When should I start the recruiting process?

Starting early gives you more time to build your profile, create coach interest, compare opportunities and complete admissions and eligibility requirements without rushing the process.

Do I need a recruiting video?

For many sports, video is one of the fastest ways for a coach to evaluate an international athlete. The exact format depends on the sport, but it should make your level easy to assess quickly.

Does NCAA Division III offer athletic scholarships?

No. NCAA Division III schools do not award athletic scholarships. They can, however, offer academic, merit-based and need-based financial aid.

Can athletic and academic scholarships be combined?

In many situations, yes. The exact package depends on the institution and applicable rules, but combining different forms of aid can significantly reduce the final cost of attendance.

What do college coaches look for?

Coaches evaluate athletic level and potential, academics, position or event needs, character, communication, timing and how you could fit their current and future roster.

How should I compare scholarship offers?

Compare the final cost, not only the scholarship percentage. Tuition, housing, meals, fees and other expenses vary between colleges, so a smaller percentage at one school can still produce a better total financial outcome.

Can I transfer from one U.S. college to another?

Yes. Transfers are common in U.S. college sports, but eligibility, admissions and transfer rules depend on the association, division and individual situation.

What if coaches are not contacting me yet?

Lack of early coach interest does not automatically mean there are no opportunities. Recruiting depends heavily on timing, roster needs, graduation year and how effectively your profile is presented and distributed to coaches.
