My name is Mila Kosoric and I began playing volleyball in the fourth grade. Before I tried volleyball, I was a ski racer but I was getting too tall for the sport, so I decided I needed a switch. In the fourth and fifth grade, I did spring and summer volleyball camps since I was skiing in the winter. In grade six, I made the complete switch to volleyball. I played for Canuck Stuff Volleyball club and won a silver medal in my first tournament. Unfortunatley, my season in grade 7 (2020-2021) was postponed due to covid, so I didn’t get to played as much as I used to. However, in 2021-2022, Volleyball Alberta allowed for competitions and I played for Dinos that year (my 14u year). The next year, I returned to Canuck and I still play for the club today (15u-17u). I started to play as a middle, then I switched to left side nearing the end of the 14u season. In summer 2023 I played for team Alberta 15U and in summer 2024 I played for Team Canada 16U/17U at Canada Cup, where I was named tournament All Star and at the Peru 17U Girls World Championships. In 15U and 16U I won provincials with Canuck stuff Volleyball Club and in 16U I was named tournament All Star. At the end of my 16U season, I was named Athlete of the Year by Volleyball Alberta. This year, I am playing for Canuck 17U with 11 other girls. This summer, I will play for team Canada 16U at the Canada Cup and at the Canada Summer Games.
Playing volleyball has taught me many things. First of all, its a team sport. Meaning that every player on the team has a role to fulfill in order for our team to be successful. This is very different from skiing since it was an “individual” team sport where I am constantly competing with and against my teammates and competing against other teams. Another thing I learned while playing volleyball is how to be leader, especially for my school’s team. Since I am one of the few people who play club in my school, I had to learn how to be encouraging towards the other members of the team and always remind them to keep their heads up. My leadership payed off and in grade 8 and 9, my team won tier one finals. In grade 9 and 10, I was awarded the CFIS volleyball All Star award.
I am grateful that volleyball has put me uncomfortable situations where I have challenged myself to work my way around them. Through this sport, I have developed many leadership and “team-first” skills which allow me to support my teammates on and off the court. I am looking forwards to see where this sport takes me and what challenges it brings!
