I have never liked to think of success as a matter of chance. To me, every result is built upon hundreds of hours of hard work, discipline, and the desire to be better than I was yesterday. I am David Andrei Bălan, a student at the “Tudor Vladimirescu” National College in Târgu Jiu, and the most important lesson I have learned so far is that true competition is not with others, but with oneself.
I first picked up a tennis racket at the age of eight in Motru, a small town in Gorj County. At first, tennis was just a new activity—a way to spend my time and have fun. However, with every training session, I discovered that I felt truly at home on the court. I realized that tennis was not merely a hobby, but what I truly wanted to do.
At the age of ten, I took a significant step in my development and began training at the Florin Mergea Tennis Academy. That was the moment I realized that talent alone is not enough. Every day, I learned that high-level performance is built through discipline, sacrifice, and perseverance. There were mornings when I left early for training, days when fatigue took its toll, and competitions where I faced defeat. Yet, every loss taught me something new and drove me to return to the court even more motivated.
The results I have achieved—including 3rd place at the 2025 National Championships—mean more to me than just medals. They are proof that major goals are not reached overnight, but through sustained effort and the courage to keep going, even when things do not go as planned.
Alongside sports, education has remained a priority. As a student at “Tudor Vladimirescu” National College, I learned to strike a balance between academic and athletic performance. Time management, responsibility, and a desire for continuous learning are qualities I developed precisely because of this balance.
Sport has also shaped me as a person. It taught me to respect my opponents, control my emotions, and understand that true character is revealed during difficult moments. I discovered that a leader is not necessarily the one who always wins, but rather the one who inspires others through personal example, dedication, and the way they respond to challenges.
I aspire to study at a university in the United States because I believe it offers the ideal environment for my continued growth. I want to learn within a community that fosters excellence, innovation, and collaboration among individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. I am convinced that my athletic experience has prepared me for the demands of such an environment and that I, in turn, will contribute through discipline, perseverance, and a drive to improve.
Looking back, I realize it all began with an eight-year-old boy from a small town in Gorj who held a tennis racket for the first time, unaware that the moment would change his life. Today, that boy has far greater ambitions, yet he retains the same passion that kept bringing him back to the court day after day. I believe that success is defined not by where you start, but by the courage to pursue your dream and the determination to work toward it every single day.
