My name is Afan, and ever since I can remember, I have been driven by two great passions: medicine and volleyball. To some, these two paths may seem completely different, even impossible to follow at the same time, but to me, they are both part of who I am. I live for the feeling of pushing my limits, whether it’s in a lab or on the court. That is what defines me.
I’m currently a high school student in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I’ve just finished my second year. I’m proud to say I’m the top student in my school, with straight A’s and a strong love for learning, especially in the sciences. Chemistry, biology and physics are one of my favorite subjects, and I often compete in regional and national competitions. Every new topic is like a puzzle to solve, and I enjoy every challenge that comes with it.
But academics are only half of my story. I am also a member of the national volleyball team of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and I train at OK Bosna, one of the most respected volleyball clubs in the country. Sports have taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to keep going when things get tough. Volleyball is more than just a sport to me, it’s a way of life. It keeps me focused, grounded, and motivated to be better in everything I do.
My ultimate dream is to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. I want to dedicate my life to helping people by doing one of the most difficult and life-saving jobs in medicine. I know that becoming a surgeon while also pursuing sports is a huge challenge but I have never been afraid of challenges. On the contrary, they inspire me.
I’ve always been told that I’m very stubborn and they’re right. But I believe that my stubbornness is my strength. When I set a goal, I work until I achieve it. I don’t give up, even when it’s hard or when others say it’s impossible. That mindset has helped me get to where I am today, and I know it will guide me even further.
Getting the opportunity to study in the United States, especially through the StudBud program, would truly change my life. It would give me the chance to grow, to learn from the best, and to follow the dreams I work hard for every single day. I am ready to give everything I have — my energy, time, heart, and mind to grow as a future doctor and as a person. I’m looking for a place that will challenge me, support me, and help me turn my vision into reality. I believe this program is that place.
